Community Spaces Grant Recipient in Big River Area

Co-op is helping to build a place for everyone in Big River, SK, with funding for the Jack Millikin Centre.

The Co-op Community Spaces Program is providing $70,000 to help build an all-season, fixed-roof facility at Ness Creek. The site is home to four music festivals, two music camps, an art camp, and biennial international artist collaborative, a winter festival and other private events. This community centre will expand programming year-round and will be used as a dance hall, classroom, workshop venue, art studio, performance space and banquet hall.

“We are thrilled to have been selected as one of this year's recipients for the Co-op Community Spaces Grant. The support from the Co-op will enable our team to complete the electrical and insulation work for the Centre - finally allowing us to make proper use of this beautiful facility year-round. We can't thank our newest community partners, Lake Country Co-op, enough,” said Carlie Letts, executive director of the Jack Millikin Centre.

Co-op Community Spaces is investing in community projects across Western Canada, from Vancouver Island through to Manitoba. The program helps create, protect and improve projects dedicated to environmental conservation, recreation and urban agriculture.

This year, 24 organizations will receive a total $2 million for their community projects. Since 2015, Co-op Community Spaces has donated $6.5 million to 88 projects.

“Co-op Community Spaces is an exciting program that provides another opportunity for Co-op to give back and invest in local projects across Western Canada,” said Dean McKim, CEO of Lake Country Co-op. “By supporting projects like this, we’re helping to build and support a vibrant and healthy community where people can come together.”

The giving program is administered by Federated Co-operatives Limited on behalf of more than 180 independent retail co-operatives across Western Canada that form the Co-operative Retailing System. The complete list of 2018 Co-op Community Spaces funding recipients can be viewed at www.communityspaces.ca.

A BBQ will be held at the Ness Creek site on July 12th from 5 to 7pm to celebrate the near-completion of the project. Information will be made available through Lake Country Co-op’s social media channels.
